The inaugural Health Care Sector Internal Audit Forum was designed for internal audit, risk, compliance and governance professionals working within the Health Care sector. The forum intended to equip attendees with insights, strategies and tools to assist their organisations in achieving effective risk management, quality controls and organisational efficiencies. The program was structured with a series of high level sessions to provide broad insights and directions in the sector, along with a number of technical risk and audit presentations.

One of OCM’s audit specialists and board member of the Institute of Internal Auditors Australia, Kylie McRae, delivered a presentation at the conference regarding internal audit methodologies in practice. Discussions included the successful applications Kylie has put into practice to effectively undertake service audits and evaluation programs in the health care sector where resources can be stretched. Kylie addressed the following key points during her talk:

  • Developing a practical audit framework to assess the performance health service delivery
  • Overcoming the challenges of engaging key staff to participate in the audit / evaluation in a busy and sometimes stretched working environment
  • Reporting on audit outcomes and prioritising key areas of focus
  • Internal audit’s role in ensuring findings are actioned

Kylie’s presentation was followed by a facilitated open forum discussion with Stephen Tiley PMIIA CIA, Head of Internal Audit and Risk Assurance, Mercy Health and Louise Derley MIIA(Aust), Director Internal Audit, Northern Sydney Local Health District, addressing key themes including:

  • Mapping the health sector audit universe
  • Managing a health service audit and evaluation program
  • Making the most of Data Analytics to deliver quality outcomes
