Privacy Awareness Week, 7th – 13th May
OCM recently hosted the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Quarterly Members meeting in Parramatta on the 8th May. As hosts, OCM invited Privacy Commissioner Samantha Gavel to address the meeting in light of it falling during Privacy Awareness Week; the recent amendments to the Privacy Act 1988 introducing a mandatory notification procedure for data breaches; and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) affecting the European Union and beyond.
Privacy Awareness Week this year addressed a theme of ‘Privacy in the Digital Age‘ and was aimed at increasing the awareness among NSW agencies of their obligations to protect personal information. Commissioner Gavel spoke to IIA members about how organisations can balance leveraging the benefits of technology and the access to data that accompanies it, whilst safeguarding the privacy of clients/customers. She included suggestions as to how internal audit might assist organisations to safeguard privacy.
